Fine Arts |
The Academy of Arts & the Hawaii State Art Museum are the two primary Fine Art showcases in Honolulu.
-
The Academy of Arts (www.honoluluacademy.org) is a must see for both locals and visitors.
Check out its website before you arrive, so you don't miss out on any of its various exhibitions and special presentations. It has an architecturally delightful home and a pleasant inhouse restaurant, so plan on lunch. Asian Art lovers will love it.
Shangrila (www.shangrilahawaii.org) Doris Duke's Mansion just past Diamond Head is affiliated with the Academy of Arts and features an impressive collection of Islamic Art.
|
Hawaii State Art Museum (www.hawaiimuseums.org) You will have to search through the website to find HiSAM, as the website includes many of the museums in Hawaii. Located on the end of Hotel Street across from the Queen's Palace, it is a delightful place to include when you are visiting the State Capitol and the Kin Kamehameha Statue. Come on Friday morning and have lunch on the Palace grounds with the Royal Hawaiian Band.
|
Downtown Arts District (www.artsdistricthonolulu.com) is the home to many of the major players in the local art scene and also the headquarters for the First Friday Art Walk. It is centered on Nuuanu Avenue between Beretania and Hotel Streets, but stretches over to Smith Street. Pick up a walking map at one of the galleries. Our favorites are listed below. |
Pegge Hopper Gallery (www.peggehopper.com) If you love Hawaii and want to bring home its essence, we recommend considering a Pegge Hopper painting. Enjoy the gallery at 1164 Nuuanu.
|
Studio of Roy Ventures (no website) If you have a love in your life, then we recommend having Roy design one of his original classic hearts for her or him.
Due to his long established presence, Roy is sometimes labeled the Mayor of the Downtown Arts District. He has one of the more funky studios on the block.
At 1160 Nuuanu.
