The Upside for Seniors

The Weather. Fresh air & gentle trade wind breezes. Not cold, nor too hot.
Outdoor Places. Many Parks & Beaches for morning walks or exercise.
The Bus. (www.the Bus.org) Convenient & Cheap. It goes just about anywhere or everywhere you want to go. How cheap? Well, for Seniors, 64 and
over, it's just $30.00 per year. That's less than a dime a day and you can ride all day if you wish. Our advice and comments on The Bus (coming soon)
.
Medical Care. Several conveniently located major medical facilities.
Senior Sensitivity. State & City Governments are sensitive to the needs of Seniors. Various agencies have programs for Seniors. Senior Info.
Senior Preferentially. Many activities, events and places offer special discounts and other benefits to Seniors.
Urban Compactness. Honolulu is a very compact city. The downtown area that houses shopping, business, government and medical facilities is less than a mile wide. This makes it convenient to get around.
Urban Casual. Honolulu is an informal, casual town. Warm weather and the outdoor lifestyle mean walking into an office wearing a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops is acceptable. This casual look is not only in, but it saves you money. Some Waikiki shops sell 7 T-Shirts for $20.00.  You can pick up a baseball hat; a couple pair of cargo shorts and flip-flops at WalMart for a song. This equates to having a week's wardrobe for next to nothing and never worry about being in fashion or having nothing to wear.

The Downside

Far Away Family & Loved Ones. This is very difficult to overcome. If you have money, you can fly to see them, or fly them to see you. They will love that. If you don't have money for plane tickets, then the telephone and email are the solutions, if that's O.K. with you.
Expensive Housing. Not easy to overcome, if your budget is tight. And the price of housing can make your budget tight.
Expensive Food. Everything is imported by boat or plane & you pay for it at the cash register. If your budget is tight, eat at home & don't dine out. McDonalds is a popular morning coffee gathering place for Seniors.
Apparent Shortage of Doctors. While there are several good medical facilites there appears to be a shortage of doctors. Numerous Seniors complain about long waits in doctor's offices; doctor arrogance; the inaccurate processing of medical bills to HMOs and Insurance companies and the apparent lack of training of administrative assistance who handle the patients' paper work.
Racism. Yes. While the tourist publications fail to mention this, it is often more evident in Paradise than where you may have come from.
Midday Sun is Hot.
Learn to deal with the sun and its negative effects on your body. Between 9:30AM and 4:00PM, wear a hat & sun block.
Some Neighborhoods Lack Sidewalks. This makes it difficult for walking safely.
Some Neighborhoods are Hilly. This can wear you out, if you are not in shape.
