China is credited with inventing bureaucracy. So not surprisingly,
documents moving through the halls of power can be subjected
to many Chops. (The Red Square above is a sample Chop). Often, Chops identify the government agency that certified the transaction or document.
When Westerners started exporting goods from China, they found
the system to be confusing and complex. Some referred to the
Chinese Customs Clearing office, as the Chop House. Without
the Chop, the goods didn't move. Some said China was one big
Chop House. Perhaps, they were right!
To newcomers, this world of Chopsticks and Chop Houses can
be as mysterious as the ingredients in Chop Suey. Sometimes confusing; sometimes bewildering; sometimes frustrating;
and sometimes amusing; but, for certain, different! That's why
you may need someone, a local assistant, who can help unravel the mystery and confront the confusing.
Remember, TIC – This Is China!
