President Barack Obama
Went to universities in California, New York and Massachusetts.
Worked as a community organizer, legislator & teacher in Illinois.
Lives at 5046 S Greenwood Avenue on the Southside of Chicago
And (soon) 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D. C.
These facts overlook the basic reality.
President Barack Obama is a son of the islands.
Born and rasied a kamaaina.
A product of the land of Aloha.
At birth, his father gave him the nickname, Barry.
Barry, was the same nickname his father chose to use
while a student at the University of Hawaii. |
The dreams and life goals of President Obama may have carried him across the ocean.
But his soul and spirit are rooted here.
Young Barry has moved on from the islands,
but the islands continue to move his heart.
While the world knows Barry as he 44th President of the United States of America
to many folks in Honolulu, when talking story of the old days, he's Barry.,
This website is intended to provide the reader with insights into Barry's childhood and teen years in Honolulu. So readers will better understand Barry's coming of age in Honolulu.

While President Obama can walk the walk and talk the talk on the streets of Harlem and the Southside of Chicago, he also knows the side streets and alleyways of Pawaa, Moiliili and Makiki. And, by the way, he knows how to pronounce these names correctly. |
| Barry also knows the local foods from Kalua Pork to Saimin. He knows the difference between Poi and Poki and knows what to expect if an invitaition says either 'Luau' or 'Heavy PuPus'. |

| Sandy Beach was a favorite haunt of young Barry when he wanted to get away and do a little Body Surfing. Sandy is near the far eastern end of the island, past Hanauma Bay and past Halona Point. |
|
| By the way, if you're going to body surf Sandy, you better know what you are doing. We recommend reading the signs slowly, and believe it, before you attempt it. |
